State Mandated Content Details: All individuals licensed by the Medical Licensure Commission of Alabama must accumulate 25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ annually. Holders of (Q)ACSC certificates are also required to gain two credit hours in Controlled Substance Prescribing biennially. Endorsed programs for these additional credits include those focused on controlled substance prescribing practices, the detection of misuse or abuse of controlled substances, or chronic pain management through controlled substance prescribing. Pre-approval for selected courses is not necessary. Even those exempt from the CME requirement, such as residents, fellows, those in their introductory year of licensure, or those in military service, must still procure 2 Controlled Substance Prescribing credits every two years. State Mandated Content Details: MD: License holders need to earn 50 Category 1 CME in every two-year renewal cycle. There's a one-off requirement to complete 12 CME hours focusing on pain management and proper care and treatment of terminal patients within the first two license renewal cycles (four years). These 12 CME credits can be distributed among the two subjects in a manner that suits the physician's specialty and practice environment. For doctors licensed from January 1, 2019, onwards, the course must also cover the topic of addiction risks related to the use of Schedule II drugs. As an alternative, a surgeon can undertake a one-time 12 CME credit hours course on the treatment and management of patients dependent on opiates, including an 8-hour training on buprenorphine treatment or similar therapeutic treatments for opioid disorders. Pathologists and radiologists are exempted from this requirement. Under California law, general internists and family physicians who have over 25% of their patient population aged 65 years or above are obligated to complete a minimum of 20 percent of their essential CME in geriatric medicine.

State Mandated Content Details: DO: Individuals with osteopathic licenses are required to fulfill 100 hours of continuing medical education in every two-year renewal cycle. Minimum of twenty (20) hours of the 50 hours must be American Osteopathic Association (AOA) Category 1A or 1B. There is a one-time requirement within the first two renewal cycles (four years) for 12 hours of CME focused on pain management and proper care and treatment for terminal patients. These 12 CME credits can be split between the two subjects in a manner corresponding to the physician's specialty and practice setting. For practitioners licensed from January 1, 2019 onwards, necessary content on the risks of addiction tied to Schedule II drugs usage should be included in the course. Alternatively, a surgeon can satisfy this requirement by attending a one-off 12 credit-hour continuing education course on subject matters concerning the treatment and management of patients addicted to opiates, inclusive of an eight-hour training on buprenorphine treatment or analogous pharmacological treatment options for opioid disorders.

The continuing medical education should align with the physician's area of practice and address their professional needs in order to cater to public health care demands. For the initial renewal period wherein continuing medical education is necessary, and at least every six years thereafter, the CME must feature at least one contact hour in each of the following subjects: (A) Infectious diseases such as AIDS and HIV, (B) risk management, including prescription of controlled substances and pain management, (C) sexual assault, (D) domestic violence, (E) cultural competency, and (F) behavioral health. Behavioral health continuing medical education can include diagnosis and treatment of cognitive conditions including, Alzheimer's disease, dementia, delirium, and other related cognitive impairments and geriatric depression, or a minimum of two contact hours on mental health conditions common to veterans and their family members. This concerns the identification of a patient as a veteran or a family member, screening for conditions such as PTSD, suicide risk, depression, and grief, and also suicide prevention training.

State Mandated Content Details: The Florida Board of Medicine mandates licensees to accumulate 38 CME credits in every two-year renewal cycle. A course on Preventing Medical Errors must cover the five most frequently misdiagnosed medical conditions in Florida over the past two years. All physicians with DEA registration are required to finish two hours of Board Approved Controlled Substance Prescribing continuing medical education each renewal period. State Mandated Content Details: Every two-year renewal cycle, physicians licensed to practice medicine in Georgia must accomplish 40 hours of Category 1 continuing medical education. Effective from January 1, 2018, all physicians possessing an active DEA certificate and prescribing controlled substances who are not subject to Rule 360-15-.01(3)* — barring those with a residency training permit — are required to complete at least three hours of AMA/AOA PRA Category 1 CME on controlled substance prescribing practices at least once. This CME should include information on controlled substance prescribing guidelines, detecting signs of abuse or misuse of controlled substances, and managing chronic pain through controlled substance prescribing. Physicians must certify this completion at the initial renewal following January 1, 2018, or at the first renewal post-licensure. The fulfillment of this requirement can contribute three hours toward the CME requisite for license renewal. It should be noted that any coursework on controlled substances prescribing guidelines completed within two years of your previous renewal will be counted toward this requirement.

Effective 2020, prescribers possessing Controlled Substances Registrations are mandated to finish 3 hours of continuing education focusing on secure opioid prescribing practices in order to renew their Controlled Substances Registration. This requirement can be accounted for within the total number of hours required for professional license renewal and applies to all Controlled Substances Registration renewals in 2020 and beyond. All individuals holding a professional license that demands continuing education for renewal need to complete a one-hour sexual harassment prevention training course. This requirement is applicable to all renewals on or after January 1, 2020. This continuing education requirement falls within the total number of hours already necessitated by the individual Acts and Rules, and does not increase the number of hours needed for license renewal.

State Mandated Content Details: Physicians are required to complete 40 hours of Category 1 Continuing Medical Education (CME) in every two-year renewal cycle. This requirement is adjusted proportionally for anyone who has held their license for less than two full years. If a physician has prescribed opioids once in the last 12 months, they must complete two CME credit hours focused on Chronic Pain Management. As per a new law passed by the Iowa legislature, these credit hours must be centered on the CDC guidelines for correct opioid prescribing. Any physician who cares for patients who are actively dying is obliged to complete two hours of Category 1 Credits for End-of-Life Care every five years. The training must pertain specifically to End-of-Life Care, not palliative care.
Every licensee delivering primary health care to children regularly needs to undergo a two-hour Department of Human Services (DHS) core training on identifying and reporting child abuse within six months of employment or self-employment, followed by a one-hour recertification every three years. Similarly, every licensee regularly offering primary health care to adults must complete a two-hour DHS core training on identifying and reporting dependent-adult abuse within six months of employment or self-employment, and then do a one-hour recertification every three years. All mandatory reporter training certificates issued before July 1, 2019, remain valid for 5 years.

State Mandated Content Details: All physicians are required to complete 60 hours of Continuing Medical Education (CME) every three years, half of which, or 30 hours, must be certified in AMA Category 1 by an organization accredited by the ACCME. The current three-year CME Cycle spans from January 1, 2018, to December 31, 2020. Physicians in Kentucky licensed to prescribe or distribute controlled substances must complete 4.5 hours of Board-approved Category 1 CME relevant to the use of KASPER, pain management, addiction disorders, or a combination of these topics. Each DEA-registered prescriber of Buprenorphine-Mono-Product or Buprenorphine-Combined-with-Naloxone is obliged to complete at least twelve (12) hours of continuing medical education, certified in Category 1, specific to addiction medicine, per three-year renewal cycle. For primary care physicians licensed after July 1, 1996, a requirement exists to complete a three-hour domestic violence training course within three years of initial licensing. Pediatricians, radiologists, family practitioners, as well as emergency medicine and urgent care physicians, need to undergo a one-time, one-hour training on Pediatric Abusive Head Trauma within five years of licensure.

For the initial license renewal, participation in a board-sponsored and/or approved orientation program is required, lasting no less than two hours. Any authorized prescriber seeking a license renewal for the first time must complete three hours of board-approved CME focusing on Controlled Dangerous Substances (CDS) prescribing practices, as part of the needed CME. Such education should include instruction on drug diversion training, the best prescriptions practices for CDS, appropriate addiction treatment, and, for doctors, treatment of chronic pain. Under the current law, this course is required once in a lifetime.

State Mandated Content Details: Every licensed physician must amass 75 hours of Category 1 Continuing Medical Education (CME) credit every three years as a prerequisite for license renewal. The board acknowledges (re)certification or current Maintenance of Competency issued by ABMS, RCPSC, or AOA as an equivalent to CME. Newly licensed physicians begin their three-year cycle in the month following their birthday, post the initial date of licensure. Licensees under Emeritus registration and those undergoing full-time residency or fellowship training at an accredited professional facility are exempt from the continuing medical education requirement. The Board of Medical Practice mandates that licensees authorized to prescribe controlled substances must obtain a minimum of two hours of continuing education credit on best practices in prescribing opioids and controlled substances between Jan. 1, 2020, and Dec. 31, 2022. This includes considering nonpharmacological and implantable device options for pain treatment and ongoing pain management to comply with the continuing education requirements for license renewal. The continuing education credit on optimum practices in prescribing opioids and controlled substances must meet the board's requirements.

State Mandated Content Details: Prescribers in New York who are licensed under Title 8 of the Education Law for treating humans and possess a DEA registration number for prescribing controlled substances are required to accomplish at least three (3) hours of coursework or training in pain management, palliative care, and addiction by July 1, 2017, and every three (3) years thereafter. Those licensed after July 1, 2017, must complete this requirement within their first year of licensure. All physicians are mandated to complete coursework or training in Infection Control at the time of their initial licensure/registration and again every four years thereafter. Moreover, all applicants for licensure as a physician or limited permit to practice medicine are required to complete coursework or training in the identification and reporting of child abuse.
